Unless jQuery's final release is delayed beyond the code freeze, jQuery will become the default JavaScript library for the next Drupal version. We chose jQuery for several reasons the two most important ones being that a) it is small and b) it lowers the barrier of entry to writing browser-based JavaScript.
We'll take a look at JavaScript in the browser, how jQuery works and why it is a good choice for Drupal, both for core and contributed modules.
