We have multiple people doing image uploads, and it would be nice to be able to have them upload to and import from different directories on the server, based on their userid. Is this possible?

It's not currently possible with the current setup of the module.

It seems like more headaches, and there should be a better way of doing this.

Have you seen Plupload Module?

It might be better suited for exposing less-trusted users to upload, and node creation.
