There is a new effort for using the same API for all modal frame/inline popups needs.
I suggest making the module a plugin for Modal Frame API when it's enabled.

Note that Modal Frame API is part of Drupal 7 core now so it's also good for forward support. Regarding to implementation you'll find many patches for other modules if you follow "Popups API deprecated" tag
