Why not?

Comments

Presently shouts are presented in chronical order, which is not suitable for comments. However, I think if shoutbox support Activity2, in this case it will have comments (much like Facebook wall).

It makes sense, because users want to comment not only on "X said...", but also on "X submitted an article"...

Of course we can set from which shoutbox we integrate Activity2. For example, all user-based shoutboxes trigger an activity, but side-wide shoutbox does not.

Activity2 doesn't have an official release now, but an alpha version will be out soon (well, that what the maintainers said).

I don't really understand what your point. Activity messages post in chronological order to. Shoutbox is a method of communication - adding comments only helps to enhance that. A user may want to shout back at something directly, rather than posting a general shout. And now that we have shoutbox_group and shoutbox_user, comments will become even more needed.

Yes, with shoutbox_group and shoutbox_user, it becomes "wall". In the Facebook philosophy, wall contains also "activities". Thus, why don't integrate all into one activity stream, that already supports comment (with a very good UI).

If you buy it, then the only problem I can see is that how to put the shoutbox form beside the activity stream, and how to refresh it. If we can reach this level of integration, it's awesome!

If you don't, then shoutbox replaces Activity. Every module supporting Activity can easily support shoutbox_user. For example, when you post a comment in a node, the node.comment adds a shout "X comment on article Y" in the shoutbox_user of X. That's good, too, but there are many things to do.

If your site uses Activity and Shoutbox, and if shoutbox has a comment submodule, turn it off and use Activity. I think shout comments are a good idea for shoutbox. Certainly other site owners might want to use something else. It'll take a lot for me to want to use or implement Activity. The 1.x branch was pretty terrible.
