As I needed this for a Drupal 7 project, here the patch that appears to work. There are 2 TODOs in the code where I wasn't sure about the behaviour. Anyway, works for me.

I've got no idea how to conduct a formal patch review (although if someone can point me in the right direction, I'll have a go!) but I'm using this patch, and it works nicely. Thanks erenddeboer!
