Syntax of pagenames tag

I know the following is one syntax to use:

But I've seen in the discussion here http://drupal.org/node/91084 that other syntax such as [paging|title=Next page title] has been discussed. Are there alternative syntax to

that we can use?

Also, "Html filter', and "HTML Purifier" both remove this tag and thus paging wouldn't work if those filters are applied. Is there a way to avoid this?
