I have this error. right now I cannot run any jQuery code at all. It used to work just before updating the jquery from 1.2.6 to the updated version 1.4.2

I just ran into this issue myself. Disabling Lightbox2 seemed to fix the problem. I don't think it's worth my time to investigate further as I was considering switching to a different lightbox library anyway. But if I was invested in it, that's the place I would start looking.
