Hey, that's a cool site!! Nice work!

Do you mind if I ask a (what is potentially dumb) question?

When I look at your videos (like here: http://stars-of-the-web.com/en/node/923 ) I see your logo 'bug' in the lower right of the video screen. Is that something that's automatically added when users upload their video?? Or are you adding that later?

Are you hosting the videos or are they remotely hosted? (I'm super afraid of hosting video myself)

chris_car’s picture

Thank you! :-)

First, users cannot upload videos or audio files. The videos and audio files are entirely recorded through your computer microphone or webcam (through a flash-based application). And yes, the "logo bug" is added automatically to the video player.

I am hosting the videos by myself. Why are u afraid of hosting videos?

>> Why are u afraid of hosting videos?

I have a site with 36,000+ registered members, and with NO media files, we're already on a mega server just to handle the bandwidth. I can't imagine what the bandwidth would be if I hosted their media...yikes! What kind of server are you using?

chris_car’s picture

I see your point.

I am just using a standard server with some amount of monthly bandwidth. But I have to admit that the average video recording just uses about 10mb... and I don't have thousands of members... yet ;-)

Great site!

Where did you get those great flash based webcam and audio recording tools? Did you write your own? If so, will you make them open source?

Good luck with your launch.

chris_car’s picture

Thanks! I developed the flash-based video and audio recorder by myself. I was thinking of making them open source...

For your information, they use the XMLRPC interface of drupal to post audio and video files.

Please make them open source!

These tools would make it so much easier for users to contribute multimedia content -- perfect for Drupal and other CMS's.

Cheers,

Jason

audio/video recording is definitely a module that may need to be developed--even if it requires additional hosting, e.g. Flash Media Server.

We looking forward to publish the module under GPL
if you wish ;)

Dear Chris,

What a great site!!

I've implemented a series of modules that allow users to add and check content to/from their Drupal sites via telephone (for an example, please get in touch with me via email leoburd at media dot mit dot edu) and I was starting to plan a way for my users to record audio directly from the site. I was thinking about doing that using Java, since I've heard that the Flash audio codec was proprietary and really hard to export as MP3 or Wav.

Anyway, do you use XML-RPC to upload the audio contents? What is the format of the audio being uploaded? So that you know, I've also written a XML_RPC extension to audio.module. My plan is to release my modules as open source in a couple of months, but things seem to be working quite well, already.

Looking forward to talking to you soon,

.L.

That's great stuff ... like odeo or bubbleshare ... We'd love to incorporate at least direct audio recording for users on the site we're building. I do hope you choose to make your solution open source or at least give us some hints as to how you did it!

Looking forward to watching your site grow, Chris. Best of luck with it!

Hey guys,

I just submitted a new module that should do everything that this site does, called FlashVideo module. Check it out at
http://www.drupal.org/project/flashvideo

I have also written a complete tutorial on how to use this module at http://www.travistidwell.com/flashvideo.

Let me know what you think,

Travis.

Thanks for a great contribution. However the site mentioned does not upload audio or video files, rather it records videos and audio files through the user's computer microphone or webcam. Will that be possible through your module? Thanks in advance,

Recording the user's audio or video is a real cool feature. I hope you release it at some point. ;)

Are you use a Flash plugin for drupal?
Or anyone know what Flash plugin can do the same thing?

Thanks

chris_car’s picture

No, I just programmed a flash application which is working with a flash media server. The flash application is just embedded in a static drupal page.

Hi Chris:

I do not see the the above site any more. I do not know whether you have changed the name or stopped the blogging. If you have stopped, would it be possible for you to share your voice recording module with us. Thanks,

Hi,

stars of the web doesn't exist anymore. But I am working on a module to record audio and video posts with audio and video comments, using red5. Everything is working already on my test server, I just have to clean up the code a bit and then I'll release it.

But still, one thing which bugs me a lot is the fact that we still need red5 or a flash media server to record anything. What I don't like is to force people to go with one red5 host which hosts my videos. I want my recorded videos on my own server without being dependent on any hosting company or external application.

But making red5 portable like a drupal module isn't possible either (it's written in Java and runs a process). Any ideas or suggestions?

Cheers!

I was not able to see the site. But I am interested in seeing how drupal, red5, and flash tie together. Let me know when you release this I am dying to try it out man. I am alright at flash developing but I am a newb to red5 and drupal. I am also interested with live video and chat with red5. Let me know if there is any progress.

chris_car’s picture

Everything is working fine so far. I am currently deploying it for a client project. After the site goes online I'll have a good showcase of audio and video recording with red5. After that I have to clean up my module and publish it, together with a quick tutorial for the red5 setup. I would so like to be able to ship a complete red5 installation with a drupal module...

I'll keep you updated. Thanks!

And I am searching for a project using drupal and red5. Possible applications can be:

- audio and video recording
- chat systems
- live audio or video broadcasting

There are endless possibilities for drupal and red5.

Let me know if you have ideas!

I released the first version of a module to record Flash videos (FLV) using the Red5 Open Source Flash Server: http://drupal.org/project/red5flashserver

Update: due to lack of time I cannot continue developing this module. An example of the module in action can be seen here: http://www.epizzod.com

Cheers!
