Change order of statuses in dropdown list

We're using signup and signup status to take registrations for volunteers for a large multi-day festival. They signup online and then when they arrive at the festival to work, they're checked in using the signup admin pages.

This is the second year using the system. The biggest complaint last year was that for each person being checked in, they must drop down the list of statuses, which defaults to registered, to find the Status: Checked In line. It would be much much faster if the list could default to status 3, rather than status 1.

I would be grateful for any kind of suggestion/hack for this. I've attached a screenshot of a given shift's signup screen. You can see the Registered line in the default. How could I change that? Thanks.
