Siteground Hosting

orionvortex - October 11, 2006 - 09:04

Does anyone have any experience with siteground hosting? Can pretty large, drupal based websites run relatively fast from their shared servers?

Really?

orionvortex - October 12, 2006 - 05:28

Really? That sounds pretty scary. I mailed them and asked about php memory limit and a few other server questions to which they replied:

"We are using 8MB of php memory and can increase it for you for free up
to 32-64MB:)
There is no limit on the number of simultaneous connections to the
databases, however there is a limit on the
CPU usage - you do not have to exceed 10% of the CPU usage for more than
5 seconds. Basically you will
find most of them stated in our Terms of Use available on our order form."

From the reply they sounded ok but I was a little worried that their servers might be a little overcrowded. Does anyone else have any experiences with siteground? I was also wondering which has a better reputation among drupal users, siteground or site5?

Site5 has better reputation

solipsist - October 12, 2006 - 22:21

Site5 has better reputation but I'm not using them. I'm with doreo.com and I like it because they are professionals and have great customer service as well as real backups. I can trust them and that's worth paying extra.

Slashing things

shane10101 - October 12, 2006 - 20:29

What's "slashing"? It sounds really painful.

It means they disable your

solipsist - October 12, 2006 - 22:19

It means they disable your hosting account. They usually refer to highly absurd things such as "server overload". It's just a legal loophole they use to have to be able to sustain their ridiculously low prices, insane amounts of disk space and transfer and still offer a service to those whose sites have very little traffic. They put too many sites on one server which means they can't handle traffic peaks or sites getting DIGG'd or have more traffic than avg, their TOS include a paragraph about "server load" so they can keep the server running with thousands of hosting accounts. Cheap hosting is a scam.

He's right - they stink

mts881 - November 15, 2006 - 00:28

Your advice is spot-on. I am currently going through with this scenario. I signed up, had a seamless install and it seems in hindsight like they were waiting for me to build a site so they could "mug" it and hold it for ransom. I am at about 1% of my stated bandwidth & disk space and it my site is completely gone. I probably have less than 500 visitors per day... today I completed the migration and sent out an email and poof... my website is gone and they want $90 / month for upgraded service to handle the "traffic".

I would have to be smoking crack to pay them more for a service they probably can't deliver. That would be like trying to invest in Enron after the scandal is played out in court.

I hope other people realize this before they sign up...

I wonder if I can dispute the charge with my credit card company.

Hmmn, this is hard.

glendac - November 15, 2006 - 17:54

It's kind of sad that low prices and great offers almost always mean something's going to go terribly wrong down the road. I guess, it's really true that we get what we pay for. I really like the ease of install, the up-to-date platforms, and support process at Siteground but getting those Internal Server 500 errors yesterday and today is giving me the shakes about doing anything serious with them. I'm just using my shared web hosting account with them as a testing site for several web apps so I'll test them out a little longer too.

I have another account with GoDaddy since 2002 but they sell stuff that are free elsewhere for the higher rate that they charge. Their Apache, PhP, and MySQL versions are always behind. PhP memory with them is especially always low for many applications that I have tried to install with them. So, I don't know. I'll keep track of evaluations and recommendations and hope to define my web hosting needs better. If that means upgrading to a non-shared account, then so be it.

SiteGround are THIEVES

rblegair - February 8, 2007 - 13:10

They would suspend your account, without legimate reasons, just to get free money, that's why there prices are low and when you pay for annual hosting in advance after the 30 day so call refund period, they would suspend your account and you do not get any refund for the remaining months. They would suggest that you upgrade to their more expensive hosting. They are just THIEVES! so beware!

Yep, I agree. I simply moved

solipsist - February 9, 2007 - 22:48

Yep, I agree. I simply moved my site off the SG account and waited a couple of months, I'm hosting another site there now that doesn't get so much hits.

My Swedish hosting company is worse, they actually required you to cancel your account in writing, and no email wasn't good enough you had to mail or fax, 30 days before it expires or they'll force you to renew it by another year. Thieves. I've cancelled my business with them as well and found greener pastures.
