Anyone have experience with both of these WYSIWYG editors? If so, I'm interested to see what people you think about them. Do you recommend FCK or Tiny?

Any assistance would be much appreciated.

Thanks.

TinyMCE is used most

I've installed the FCK Editor but I didn't use it much, even though I like many of the features. But most plugins are developed for the combination of TinyMCE/Drupal ie image_assist. In fact, I'm not aware of any Drupal plugins that integrate with FCK.

I ran the Microsoft Malicious Software Removal tool, but Internet Explorer is still installed on my computer.

You don't need any plugins

You don't need any plugins in FCKeditor because all plugins already there, including Image and File Manager/Browser. TinyMCE sells Image and File manager separately and TinyMCE is not GPL! TinyMCE plugin for file manager is $354 for Server Licence, while TinyMCE Image manager about $200 for server licence. Also, FCkeditor is not GPL too!

If you don't want to pay

there's always imce.

But this thread has me interested again in fckeditor, maybe I'll give it a shot.

licence and plugins

the editor component for FCKeditor is lgpl, which is also an open source licence.

The IMCE module will work with fckeditor, and I will look into keeping it that way for upcoming versions.

FCKEDITOR: The editor is distributed under the GPL, LGPL and MPL open source licenses.

If you're just looking to

If you're just looking to give your users a MS Word feel, so they can format their posts a bit, likely either one would be just fine. What specifically are you after?

Quick comparision

TinyMCE:
+ faster
+ easier
+ more validated output
- need to pay for additional plugins incl. file manager

FCKEditor:
+ supports more programming languages (incl. perl)
+ has file manager already
- more resource-eating
- in some narrow cases uses some depreciated tags (less validated output)

If you want to have quick easy paste from Word feature use TinyMCE.
If want to upload and use images, PDF's, upload and embed flash, draw tables or even upload and use media files (sounds and video) you choose FCKEditor.

Some corrections

IMCE is a great file manager for TinyMCE, it handles images, PDFs, and basically any file type you want. There is a Flash plugin included in the standard TinyMCE distribution (though I haven't used it). Tables aren't perfect in TinyMCE, but they're there and are usable.

FCK Editor has been good.I had chosen FCK Editor over TinyMCE months back after going through many posts.I think they still hold good.

Yahoo's editor is the only

Yahoo's editor is the only one I'll use. I HATE TinyMCE, find FCK barely tolerable, but Yahoo's doesn't seem too bad. Reasonable markup and ok configuration options.

i disagree

i tried this suggestion, but i disagree--at least, if you need anything more than bold, font choices, and size (image support seems limited for example, unlike imce with tinymce), but the YUI is very nice for basic text manipulation. you be the judge. you can learn more here: http://developer.yahoo.com/yui/editor/#start

in d5, note that panels and tinymce don't always work well together (try making a panel page that includes the node comment form, and watch the weirdness begin), thus try this: http://www.chapterthree.com/blog/matt_cheney/howto_use_tinymce_panel_pan...

I have had nothing but

I have had nothing but problems with YUI. I'm using a Mac and have tried it in both Safari and Firefox. (I think I even tried it in Windows, as well, but can't remember.) I kept getting validation errors when I saving the page. It would take me multiple tries before the page would finally save. I am trying FCK. If that works well, I'll stick with it. If not, I'll try TinyMCE.

For me...

I tried Tiny first, but had some issues and just didn't care for it... mostly the lack of options/plugins... and am not willing to pay an arm and a leg for them.

So, I went with FCK. Yes, it does take some tweaking to get it to where you want it or to get what you may need from it. It has done some quirlky things here and there; Like one day, my full justify option just disappeared. I went back in the module and fixed it. May have even been something I did. And yes, it is a bit slower than Tiny, but it's nothing terrible... I can definitely live with it. And FCK seems to be more maintained than Tiny.

FCK has a LOT of options and is, in my opinion, more powerful than Tiny. When my site was powered by Mambo, I used Tiny (I think)... and I remember having all kinds of issues - been too long to remember exactly what they were.

I think both are good editors, but for me, given the availability of free plugins and stuff with FCK, and it being more stable on my site, I'll stick with it.

Guess it really depends on what you're gonna do with it. But, I'd go with FCK, even if you don't need all it has... maybe down the road you will.

Whatever you do, DON'T use YUI. It's horrible!

FCK Editor

I first used TinyMCE, but now I got rid of it in favour of FCK Editor, for various reasons: TinyMCE was badly working on Safari (and some users were upset), it was lacking some options I needed, I was a mess to get img_assist and spellchecking working, TinyMCE.module was abandoned and WYSIWYG.module was still too immature to be able to fully replace it... FCK Editor is a bit heavier, but more pleasant to use and more complete.

I've been using FCKeditor because it has more options. It is definitely a little quirky and requires more config though. Takes some time, but once configured, it's works well.

I still feel FCKeditor is a little clunky at times and would like to see some more of the kinks worked out to make it easier to configure.

You can use WYSIWYG module,

You can use WYSIWYG module, http://drupal.org/project/wysiwyg and it makes installing any supported editors including FCKeditor easier. Also provides more customisation options like choosing the keys in the editor to be displayed and more.

FCKeditor in IE

I am using FCKeditor and have played around with it quite a bit to get it to do what my clients need... to paste content from Word Docs. Not sure what I did to fix it but now we can paste from Word without weird MS formatting stuff showing up! It does that great now but if they need to edit any of the formatting (font etc) it is not real user-friendly at this point.
In addition, I was wondering, what needs to be done to make FCKeditor compatible with IE? The text box isn't showing up in IE so we use Firefox. My clients would like to also be able to edit in IE. Any suggestions? What am I missing to do?
Thanks!

If I made no mistakes today I must not have been very productive.
I'll try harder tomorrow!

I first started with YUI but it was just way too simple. Tiny was nice but then it seemed like a bunch of hidden costs. "Would you like fries with that? Yes? Well... ketchup & napkins are extra, too!" I'm doing volunteer work for a non-profit. If I spent ANY money It would be a challenge. Going back to the well is even more painful. I like the Open Source aspects of FCK and the power out-of-the box and under-the-hood. I have even made some MODs - for shadowbox as the target in a link. I also love the ICME integration & file handling. It is very well written and modular. When we upgraded - my MODs were completely unaffected.

One thing that I haven't been able to get working with any of them is <--break--> and the teasers. It always seems to screw up my theme b/c of invalid markup or DIVs that are opened in the teaser are not closed when the auto-break kicks in @ 300chars. Its not really the editors fault but FCK does seem to add a lot of extraneous stuff in the html -- like extra DIVs ot FONT tags that should (or could) be combined -OR- height, width & alt="" on IMG tags even if you want to use the default'. Sometimes it will also try to fix what it thinks is bad markup by adding more bad markup. Back-end html code beautification would be nice - too. so that when you look at if from a non-javascript perspective (like a phone browser) it's not all mashed together. It format's it nicely when you view the source from the FCK interface.

I guess I just wish it were smarter so that my users didn't "hafta" be... especially the word cut-n-paster(s). Teasers with bloated markup & the FCK break button usually "break" my page. No-one has really mentioned THAT in the other posts - so, I assume it's just MY issue. I was searching for some sort of fix for THAT when I stumbled upon this thread. Now I think I'm ruling out tinyMCE as a possible candidate & sticking with FCK.

Boy it would be nice if it were built into core drupal (like in some of the other CMS's), hmm...
