the whole page is messed up after this.

This is on a Debian Woody box which is running php 4.1.2 which may be the problem... If so, please advise users that a higher verson of php is needed.

I'm not sure what the status of this issue is since it said version 4.2.0 which surely was a mistake of some kind. Did you check to see if the users having this problem have the 'access user profiles' permission? The buddylist module is pretty dependent on this permission... it doesn't make much sense without it.
