Building a Twitter like filter

I'm interested in building a twitter like filter except that I would like to have the flexibility to turn other words into links besides those beginning with @ and #. For example, I might want to turn a word beginning with ^, $ or & into a highlighted link. Does this module have the ability to handle this task? If so, I would greatly appreciate a few pointers on how to get it done.
