It's a pity that this isn't possible easily. That would be very useful. Entering them twice or even more times isn't a good solution because of inconsistence when a link is altered.
Therefore I took a look to the tablestructure and found it as you said: not possible. But I think it would be very useful and reasonable as well to migrate this.
You may say I have good talking (a proverb in German, maybe a horrible translation) because I don't have to change it.
Maybe you can see this as a improvement suggestion for a version 5.x-2.x
In case of altering the database that way you may also consider to use core categorymodule instead of your own category table. That way you don't need more tables - but different ones ;-)
Would be great if you do not definitly say no to this because I like the design of this module much more than that from the other link-modules....
