Earlier other modules could do this:

chessboard_image_path('/images/');
chessboard_render($board);

It is likely that both functions will be removed in new branches, in favour of passing everything to one theme function, but at this point we cannot just break it.

The setting gets overwritten in template_preprocess_chessboard().
