User 1 can see and click on the "Download original" link in the Lightbox slideshow, but none of the other users can. I have set the permissions for Lightbox so that all users can download the original, but to no avail. Additionally, Lightbox2 issues suggest that this is more dependent on the permissions of whatever other modules are being used for image handling.

My workaround is to make the full node for image link to the image at admin/content/node-type/gallery-image/display, but this is roundabout and counterintuitive for users since they have to click on "View image details" in the slideshow. Does anyone know how to let all users see the Download original link?

That's a lightbox permission. Check the permissions page.
