how do I edit the theme?

Hi and thanks for the theme, but im having problems trying to style it.

In particular the blocks, Ive added .block {my css} to style.css but nothings changing, tried .block .content, im using firebug and inspecting what I want to change, but when I add my own css it doesnt pick it up.

Am I doing this correctly
