It shouldn't be up to the webmeister to censor the site. If a visitor doesn't want to see posts from another user, he should be able to tick a check box next to that person's username, and never have to hear from them again. That would offer the following advantages:
- Less for the webmaster to do
- No need for community discussions about whether to ban someone
- More choice on the part of the user
However, this creates the following issues:
- Are replies to the posts of banned users also caved?
- Or should the user who is caving someone have the choice to see the replies?
- Does this mandate using threaded comments?
- Do all users need to be educated about the possibility that their response may not be visible to everyone?
- And wouldn't this deter people from making "@userA..., @userB..., @userZ..." type comments, and would this be a good thing?
- And there would need to be a section under My Account so users can be unbanned by unticking the box.
- Should there be a cave-o-meter which shows what percentage of visitors have caved someone
- Performance/resource issues
I know this might be difficult to sort out, but personally, I would like to be removed from the responsibility of having to babysit those who didn't learn proper socialization skills in kindergarten, and act as the censor of what should be a free interaction between equal minds.
BTW Daniel, you have a clever and devious mind. We should go TP someone's house together sometime.
