Last night we discussed that there is not a critical bug for the lack of a marketing plan for d7. I will not make it critical but we /need/ to use the momentum for the D7 release. The next release might be 1+ - two years away and missing this oppertunity is a mistake
We are good at what we call "traditional" marketing, twitter, slashdot, cnet, digg etc. But if we want to reach beyond our usual audience that knows about drupal we have to use (for us) non traditional media as well. Fo proprietary software vendors btw, it is the other way around, they are good at old media and just catching up on new media.
So we need to make the D7 release rock worldwide, everybody should learn how to spell "D R U P A L" that day.
We need different people who can coordinate events. And people that come up with crazy ideas. Firefox can be seens as an example with viral videos, max number of downloads in a day, ads in the NY Times.
So who want to help with ideas?
* all day camroulette with people with druplicons on their head
* a druplicon made up of names (ascii arts) of sponsors, coders in print media
* download via the piratebays en go after firefox's record
* in every state/country a drupalcon release party
* all trending topics on twitter be drupal related (#drupal #d7 #release #cms #best ...)
* ...
And who wants to help coordinate to make this happen?

Blooniverse commentedYes, I could help with coordination [in a time limited way, obviously].
A few sample ideas for a start:
Twitter emo/fun messages:
Keyword Landing Sites like:
Important might be, as I find, to organise activities completely outside of the branch (digital economy: ict/web) in order to reach people one wouldn't reach otherwise!

SqyD commentedSome more:
Creative
- Song contest. Must be an original recording under a liberal CC license.
- Video contest. May or may not use songs from the song contest.
Media offensive:
- A wiki page full of hashtaggs Digg, Like this, +1, Hashtags, Thumbs up widgets and what not.
- Would be nice if a short url like http://drupal.org/7 would be pre announced and reveal a nice landing page on launch day. Good for twitter, print, posters, stickers and what not.
- Twitter and facebook are nice but let's also target local (tech) news gatherers like techblogs, print media, local media. A pre release of a presskit would make a simultaneous multi lingual release possible.
My 2 cents
PS: can we at least make this "major?"

great ideas so far, my favs:
- releaseparties in every country/city
- landing page with all information for press (if possible multilingual) and aggregation of the buzz (pics from parties, twitter messages, geomashup, congratulation videos on youtube, download counter?...)
- special facebook page of course
- and some other crazy viral stuff ;)

dmitrig01 commentedRelease parties are hard because Drupal 7 doesn't have a scheduled release date. But they're an excellent idea!

SqyD commentedWhat about a 48 by 85 meter animated Druplicon?? (help needed)
I work at KPN. The KPN building in Rotterdam is equipped with 896 (22 by 41) green lights that can be used to display animations. Some examples:
- http://vimeo.com/14954934
Graphics is not my expertise so I would like to crowd source this.
We need one monochrome bitmap (.bmp) with the following specs:
One frame is 22 wide x 41 high.
One animation is max. 1012 pixels wide = 46 frames.
Please attach your submission in this thread or send it to me: sqyd@sqyd.net
I have permission and funds for a 4 hour timeslot. Time allocation is flexible so when we have a date I can give a go ahead.

bertboerland commentedthis would be the coolest thing ever! period!
apart from the fact that we need to organise in other countries as well, other activities as well, this should be done! way cool.
paul, can je contact me (private email address) so we can get this rolling?
only downside is that we do not know at what time / date the release will be happening and we need to get lots of other stuff done as well, film it and maybe even stream it (but I bet you can help with that as well). I'll contact dries to see what we can do with regards to a head up.

bertboerland commentedI created a seperate issue for the KPN animation on http://drupal.org/node/985496 so this ticket can be used for the bigger plan

rschwab commentedSomeone could make "Drupal has a posse" guerrilla stickers to place around town :)
EvanDonovan commentedAnd, most importantly, there's #953314: Write the Drupal 7 release announcement. I would mark this duplicate in favor of that, but a marketing plan is broader in scope.
dmitrig01 commentedi think the question is begged, who is the target audience for the big announcement?

jpstrikesback commented@dmitrig01 - I'd say the inhabited earth...
This sounds kinda crazy but... (being a musician) it would be kinda fun to put out a single on itunes and on the day of drupals release promote it on the front page of d.o driving purchases to it, and if enough people were ready i.e. the song was funny/good the buzz could be generated. For 99c support the $this, we might chart, ya never know. Then give away 75% of the proceeds to some major non-profits and 25% to the drupal association (close to Christmas too)...
So it's not shameless self promotion the artist could be a large druplicon playing a guitar or something.
whaddayathink, it's out there I know
Comment #17
dmitrig01 commentedwhat about giving 100% to the drupal assoc? I'd be happy to help out, we'd need someone to play the music? :-)
jpstrikesback commentedSure 100% of the proceeds could go to the drupal association, that might make it easily compliant with the trademark as well (if one mentioned Drupal). I've started a new issue http://drupal.org/node/988212 where we can continue the discussion, love your compositions btw dmitrig01

bertboerland commentedplease all, look at http://www.drupal7releaseparty.org/
and now start planning a release party (in days rather then weeks?!) and when website is functioning, add it to the map!
EvanDonovan commentedGot "Error during map rendering: TypeError: newFeature.geometry is undefined" in the left column of that site.
bertboerland commentedthe site is still workinprogress, but do not wait for the site, start planning release parties or other cool evnts now.

While we aren't covering the full discipline of marketing, we are focused on promotion of the release.
