'Personalization' in the proposed Drupal Features of the About page is covered in other sections, so does anyone have any suggestions to replace this heading? Multl-site, security, etc are all things we could 'feature'.
The only catch is that we want to stick with the existing icons because creating new ones will take awhile. The Personalization one is a wrench, though in theory we could swap the wrench with another section icon.

lisarex commentedMarking as critical
Comment #3
lisarex commentedHow about Rapid Site Assembly?
http://redesign.drupal.org/about
Comment #4
lisarex commentedI also think that something about User and Role based permission system might be useful...
lisarex commentedOK, here are the proposed 8 section names.
Do these best represent what Drupal can do for people new to Drupal?
Top row:
WEB-BASED CONTENT MANAGEMENT
SOCIAL PUBLISHING
ROBUST EXTENSIBILITY
POWERFUL DESIGN CUSTOMIZATION
Bottom row:
RAPID SITE ASSEMBLY
FINDABLE CONTENT
THRIVING COMMUNITY
ROLE-BASED USER MANAGEMENT
Comment #6
farrissFindable content is the only one of this list that I struggle with. All others have my +1.
Perhaps Search Integration rather than findable content if search alone was not descriptive enough?
lisarex commentedI think Alex had some ideas about including taxonomy / content organization somewhere. Perhaps we should retitle this section...
alex ua commentedI'd like to suggest dealing with these items in a slightly different way, that will hopefully cut down on the length of the titles, which I feel should fit on one line (prob. 2 words max). First, I suggest changing the first line from "Drupal Features" to "Content Management Features" (I don't think you need to say Drupal again there, it says "About Drupal" directly above).
I'd then suggest something along the lines of (as well as some of the items I'd see falling under each category- this is not in any particular order):
BUILD (or SITE BUILDING) - Rapid prototyping, menus, Panels(?), Blocks(?)
CREATE - web based interface, custom content types
ADMINISTER - Site config, user and role management, ease of use
EXTEND - API/Framework, Modules, Themes, 3rd Party integration
DISPLAY - Theming, views, jQuery
COLLABORATE - Content permissions, users roles, OG, Drupal community
ORGANIZE - Taxonomy, Pathauto, Content Relationships, Context
FIND - Breadcrumbs, Search/Solr
Thoughts?
farrissI like this approach as well, but I think the word Design should be called out. Would Design and Display work?
lisarex commentedThat works for me too. I guess we're demphasizing Social Publishing, but that's OK. I am sure it can be mentioned in the copy somewhere.
So I've had some other feedback. The about page doesn't really summarize what Drupal is. The existing about page http://drupal.org/about has an intro paragraph.
What if we worked this into the top of the page? "Drupal is a free software package that allows anyone to easily publish, manage and organize a wide variety of content on a website. Hundreds of thousands of people and organizations are using Drupal to power an endless variety of web sites."
We should consider including the mission and values content to replace the "Built for Today" section, which frankly sounds a little nonsensical!? http://drupal.org/mission
Comment #11
alex ua commented@farriss - Design & Display works for me.
@lisarex - I was thinking that "Collaborate" would include "Social Publishing" (since the "social" part is really referring to collaborating).
I think an intro paragraph is a great idea. When I go to an about page I expect there to be a 1-2 paragraph 'elevator pitch', and I'm sure others are looking for the same...
lisarex commentedOK, let's run with this. I've updated http://redesign.drupal.org/about with new section names, paths (which point to nonexistant nodes) and added an intro sentence.
Feedback?
alex ua commentedOne thing I still think we need to to add "Content Management" to the "Drupal Features" header, otherwise the titles are a little less clear to me. I'm happy to start adding these pages, but what's the best way to do this? Do we have an "about" book started for the redesign someplace (assuming we're using a book for this)?
lisarex commentedDrupal Features is an unpublished child of About Drupal
http://drupal.org/node/909476
All new content is to be created on d.o. We can publish stuff as soon as it's ready or nearly ready :)
That said, I wonder if Drupal Features should just be it's own book.
re the header, are you suggesting we go with "Drupal Content Management Features"
alex ua commentedYes, I'm suggesting we go with something like "Drupal Content Management Features", or something similar.
I don't have access to that Features page. What permission on d.o. do I need to see it/edit it? I'll request that permission so I can be a better help here (and elsewhere). I'm already on the documentation team, but I suspect I may need access to another input filter...
lisarex commentedI've added "Drupal Content Management Features" as the subheading....
Alex, maybe it's only d.o. administrators that can see that unpublished nodes.
Instead of creating 8 separate pages, which is frankly going to take us ages, what do folks think of having a single Drupal features page that goes into more detail, has screenshots etc. WP has a nice Features page http://en.wordpress.com/features/
we could also create links such as "Read more in the XXXX section: xxx Feature" so we're making it clear to folks that they're leaving the About pages?
We can also expand it out later, but right now, I am very concerned about getting this content written and approved on time.
alex ua commentedI don't object to having a features page, but I definitely think it's a very bad idea to limit the features to one page, at the very least from a search/seo perspective. If I was building/architecting the site outside of the context of d.o. I would create a Core Feature content type and then have a couple of views displaying each level of explanation, with taxonomy and/or node relationships creating the structure. The end result is that you catch the people who search for one of Drupal's features and come to find this powerful, free, and widely used application that gives you 'so much more', and you also make it easier to traverse the myriad of features that Drupal offers (via Solr/Search, or simply clicking around). Come for the features, stay for the code, or something like that... ;-)
Either way, my opinion with content is that as with Drupal itself, the more modular and self-contained it can be, the better...
lisarex commentedDrupal Features is it's own, published book now (self-contained, as you suggest). I'll add the path later.
http://drupal.org/node/909476
We need to add copy & content to the 8 subsections to this. I'll create the those now, since we're set on the names.
This is a great-looking "features" section: http://basecamphq.com/tour#/save_time
Comment #19
lisarex commentedThe 8 subsection issues are:
#895150: Create page in About: Drupal Features needs content and screenshots
#895350: Administer page in About: Drupal Features needs content and screenshots
#895192: Connect page in About: Drupal Features needs content and screenshots
#895294: Design and Display page in About: Drupal Features needs content and screenshots
#895276: Extend page in About: Drupal Features needs content and screenshots
#895550: Collaborate page in About: Drupal Features needs content and screenshots
#912500: Build page in About: Drupal Features needs content and screenshots
#912506: Organize & Find in About: Drupal Features needs content and screenshots
Comment #20
lisarex commentedI've also moved the old Features book node into the new Drupal Features book, with the idea that the content on this page will be absorbed by the 8 existing sections by a copywriter

rhuber commentedHi Lisa,
Achieve would like to help. Unfortunately we're joining the party very late and think it would be best if we did a test before we commit to Jacob. Since we're new to this side of the project I want to make sure we don't duplicate any current efforts. Can you give us guidance on one of the section we can take a crack at? Something related to the work Bill is doing on Solr Search would be ideal.
Thanks,
Ron
Comment #22
lisarex commentedHi Ron, in comment #19 are the 8 sections that need work. The Find section, which would be related to Bill's work, has been snapped up by Chrispomeroy #895192: Connect page in About: Drupal Features needs content and screenshots so your folks could either pick another issue or see if they want to work w/ Chris?
chrispomeroy commentedI am open to working together on it or even letting you run with it. At this stage of the game we should just try to bang out as much as we can.
In the meantime I will post anything I complete so we don't overlap...
alex ua commentedI hate to do this, but after trying (and largely failing) to write the 'Organize' section, I think it would be much better to combine Organize and Find. These are really flip sides of the same coin (i.e. you organize so that you can find), which is really "Content Scaling". So, how about 'Scale' instead of 'Organize' & 'Find'? I.e. something along the lines of:
"Drupal makes it easy to manage sites as simple as a brochure or as big as your imagination (and content) can take you..."
I'm not 100% sure what I think should fill in the empty slot if this is acceptable, but I was thinking that we could use a dedicated page for "Connect", which could focus on RDF, feeds, social media/networking integration, CRM integration, etc.
lisarex commentedHi Alex, after discussion in IRC, I think this makes sense. If you want, we can either change the one of the Organize or Find tickets into a Connect ticket (since I have these URLs everywhere, I don't want to lose track, if possible)... or create a new Connect one and reference the closed one.
Edited to add: Not sold on "Scale" as the title, but maybe we'll come up with something the describes the page and is meaningful to the audience during the content writing.
rhuber commentedHi Lisa,
I had our technical writer look at this project and I think his head actually made a full rotation. Bill get's back tomorrow and if he can shed some light on the subject then we'll take a shot.
I'll let you know more tomorrow,
Ron
Comment #27
rhuber commentedHi Lisa,
Doesn't look like we're going to be much help on the writing portion of the project.
Ron
Comment #28
lisarex commentedRon, thanks for checking in.... and thanks for the visual :) I think we've got it under control now with our copywriter.
jolidog commentedThis is marked has needs review, but the discussion continued for several posts after that...
Anyway, I have a suggestion, the only title that's breaking the layout is "Dedicated Security Team" and I think it can be changed to just "Security Team".
Other than that the page looks good and ready to go.
lisarex commentedAnd fixed!
