This recommendation came from Ben Finklea of Volacci. I agree that this would be an improvement over "Drupal Homepage"

ben finklea commentedWe did some keyword research and found that Open Source CMS was probably the best keyword phrase. spelling out CMS was not a common search. There are other good keywords that we found but are probably more appropriate on other pages within the site rather than the home page.

farrissI'd recommend: Drupal | Open Source CMS.

ben finklea commentedCool. The title tag is so short that I think it's immaterial from a usability standpoint.
Let me explain my reasoning. From an SEO perspective, the title tag is the single most important place to put keywords. Since d.o will always rank #1 for the word "drupal" it makes more SEO logic to put some other, more generic term first.
Another consideration is that we should standardize it across the entire site at the end of the title tag. The word Drupal isn't the most important thing on every single page. Important but not most important. I would argue that it's not the most important on the front page, either...

farrissI do think this has an impact on usability and Drupal should be first from a user perspective in the page title on the home page. For example, when a user is evaluating solutions and has multiple tabs open, they should see Drupal | Open Source C... not Open Source CMS | Drup...
This is less of a concern for me deeper in the site and I'd be ok with either a prefix of Drupal | or suffix of | Drupal for the page title.

ben finklea commentedHmmmm...OK. Good point. I'll concede on the front page if we can put keywords first on other parts of the site, especially the ones that we're creating for marketing purposes. Really, all pages should have the content specific words first, then Drupal. I agree that the front page's most important thing is "Drupal" but that's not the case throughout the site and it is just not good practice to have super-similar title tags on every page.
If we reorder the front page then we can get rid of the |, which I put there for usability reasons. So:
Drupal Open Source CMS
is succinct and will work well for both users and SEO.

lisarex commentedI've changed it. if you want to discuss further, feel free to reopen :)

naught101 commentedSome kind of punctuation would be nice in there. It reads a little oddly without it. Perhaps
Drupal, Open Source CMS
or
Drupal: Open Source CMS

gdemetAgreed, there needs to be some kind of separate between "Drupal" and "Open Source CMS". I suggest bringing back the pipe or using a colon.
lisarex commentedA pipe will be present anyway, showing drupal.org after it, so rather than two pipes how about an ndash?
Drupal - Open Source CMS | drupal.org
Comment #11
gdemetThat works for me!
