I believe the opt-out message is alarming and off-putting to potential registrars. It makes it sound as if their wishes could easily be ignored. I personally always opt-out off all newsletters, and if I saw this displayed on a site, I would simply not register.

While everything in the statement is technically true, I know that on my site I would never violate a users wishes regarding a subscription.

I would like to either see this message toned down, or have the ability to change it.

A message like: "Check box to opt-out of receiving mass e-mails from [site-name]." would be much more consistent with what is displayed elsewhere on the web.

Sites who plan to violate the user's wishes would do so anyway, and I believe users are aware of this when they hand their email address over to a site.

I'll add an option to change it in a future release.

I've added an option to allow the site admin the ability to word it exactly how he or she wants it. The 5.x-dev change is here: http://drupal.org/cvs?commit=433694 and the 6.x-dev change is here: http://drupal.org/cvs?commit=433684.
