6.x-0.1-alpha1 is hardcoded to use the 3rd party service http://zoom.it/, which generates the DZI tiles and provides an embed script.

This means the module depends on the 3rd party service being available (both at generate-time and each time the page is rendered).

By making the DZI-generator pluggable, other DZI generators could be used, including a local generator.
