Hello. I'm a Drupal newbie and I will start working on my first Drupal project very soon. I'm building an intranet for a client (I know I might be in over my head with such a big first project, but how else do you learn, right?). Only around 100 people will be using it daily, spread out over a few cities, via vpn.
I'm in a position where I can tell the hosting partner to set up whatever I want for my client. Any recommendations or warnings? I understand Linux/Unix is preferred over Windows, is there anything else I should know or consider?
Thanks

a Linux powered server.
a Linux powered server. absolutely. Most do.
Depending on the number of transactions/requests that are expected hit the server daily, a shared hosting account may not be enough. This in part also depends on which, and how many modules are incorporated into the Drupal site. If the site is likely to be a large site with lots of server requests per day, you may need to look a a VPS solution.
Right, Linux it is,
Right, Linux it is, thanks!
Since there is only about a hundred people in the company, I doubt the traffic load will be enormous, but obviously I want them to be able to grow. I guess a dedicated server might be a little overkill, depending on how much it costs. But I'll recommend to at least use a Virtual Server then.
Thanks, again.
Linux hosting is always the
Linux hosting is always the right choice for Drupal site. You need to decide what type of web hosting (shared hosting, vps hosting, or dedicated server) you will need based on your memory needs or traffic.
