Howdy! I am looking for a solution that will allow the following:
- Allow portal members to have a profile where they can post various information AND post events that will be visible in a calendar.
- Provide me (the admin) with a mailing list so I can communicate with these portal members
- Allow site visitors to access information posted by the portal members (events, profiles, services, etc.)
Does Drupal facilitate this type of function? If so, what types of mods do I need?
Also, I looked at a few mods and saw the terminology "node access". What is this referring to?
Thanks!

Mostly you could look at some of the case studies and see how other people have done similar things.
You would obviously start with modules like "Event" or "Date" and then add "views". But you probably should start by reading the handbook or watching some tutorials if you're just starting.
Finally,
I don't know why you couldn't find node access. Is something wrong with your browser?

while I generally agree with you, it's a rather rude and unrespectful way of expressing yourself. In the same way as you directed the OP to how to write meaningful forum titles (actually, I don't think it was such a bad title, I new exactly what I was expecting when I read that title), may I refer you to the new Drupal Code of Conduct: http://drupal.org/node/897616
also, my guess would be that the OP is more confused with the term "node" rather than the module, Drupal terminology can be confusing for newbes that's why we have this little glossary: http://drupal.org/getting-started/before/terminology
