It would appear that the number of items that show up in the feed is governed by the pager number of items in the default display. It would be incredibly useful if those values could be overriden in the field display. Because I use the nodeheirarchy module and that only allows child views to use the default display I can't have different numbers of items for it and the feed.

Don't see any problem with this. You can override number of items to display the same way as for any other display, and it works just fine.
