Would it be possible to make it so links with rel="shadowbox" (or lightbox, etc.) get excluded/don't open up a new tab?

I agree. I'm using this with the flickr module and shadowbox, but I don't want the shadowbox images to open in a new tab, etc. I am relatively new and would like to help with a solution, but am not sure where to get started.

would like to exclude external links being opened with thickbox.
i could also exclude those by url but it seems the settings only
allow to exclude internal (drupal-) paths?
