won't have all the contributed modules
I don't know that you really need to learn 6 before using 7, but it's probably a good idea. The main thing is that not all of the contributed modules that work in Drupal 6 have been ported to Drupal 7, so you'll be able to do more with Drupal 6. When Drupal 7 has all the modules you need, you can upgrade then. I have both installed on my box, just so I can check out the differences.

Right!
The more I am exploring contributed modules the more worried am getting as most of the modules are available for drupal 6. I am desperately waiting for these modules to get ported to drupal 7
You can also start learning
You can also start learning Drupal 7 now, but that has some disadvantages. The documentation is not ready yet and the community may be less able to help you because people are still learning themselves. With the current state of D7, you are more likely to encounter bugs. Many contributed modules are not yet be available for Drupal 7. Also, keep in mind that it is not recommended to release a production site with Drupal 7 before the first stable version.
Anyway, an upgrade from Drupal 6 to Drupal 7 will be available in Drupal 7. When you get into small details, the following might not be completely true... but in general, you can be sure that D7 can do anything D6 does - and a lot more.
Is Drupal 7 Stable now?
Hi,
We are planning to upgrade from drupal 6 to 7 for one of our production sites. With the above comment I came to know that its not suggested to upgrade. Please suggest us based on later/ recent releases.
Do you have any comparison report of Drupal 6 Vs Drupal 7
Thanks,
Vidya.
research
Please research before you ask questions.
Drupal 7.0, the first stable version of the 7-branch, is released as you can see on the Drupal.org front page, on http://drupal.org/drupal-7.0 and on http://drupal.org/download (to name but a few).
AFAIK, no one has said that it's not suggested to upgrade. It's your choice. Documentation about upgrading can be found at http://drupal.org/documentation/upgrade/6/7. If you want to know the difference between D6 and D7, you can search Google for "compare drupal 6 drupal 7" or "what's new in drupal 7", which will lead you to http://drupal.org/about/new-in-drupal-7 and a lot of other resources.
