in my httpd error log I see this error:
[notice] child pid 1309 exit signal Bus error (10)

I am a drupal newbie, and have clean installation, with only E-commerce installed as an additional module.

I have following EC functionalities enabled:
apparel, cart, payment, product,store, shipping, tangible, subproducts

When subproducts is enabled, I can no longer create new content 'page' objects. I simply get a bus error as described above.

Can anyone shed some light on this?

See this issue: http://drupal.org/node/72336. Does the patch at the bottom may fix your problem?
