See the attached picture.

Double animations in the same visual field confuses me, kills my eyes and brain.
This is absolutely against any usability or UI or any principle.
As many people I asked and showed they do not know which of the moving pictures they are supposed to follow.

(It even gives me a vertigo sort of thing. Is it just my problem? Should I visit a doctor?)

Title: Double animations in the same visual field is a very strict no-no » Double animations in the same visual field
Status: Active » Needs work

Agreed that this is an issue as currently implemented, but I believe this is still being tweaked, correct?

IMO, we should probably introduce some consistent standards for the sizes of elements that appear in the map pop-up bubbles as well as the "Sites Made with Drupal" showcase thumbnails.

Also, because I couldn't resist:

"Double animations!? Woah! What does it mean!?"

Title: Double animations in the same visual field » Double animations in the same visual field should not be there

It is not about the size but two moving, shifting, or popping element in the same field. In brief, we may refer to this as animation. 2 animations in the same visual field http://drupal.org/files/issues/double_animation.gif should not be there.

Double means two. Animations means animations or pictures that are not still.
Two animations are in the same visual field. Eye or brain cannot follow.
If you cannot grasp please see the attachment, please.

I guess many things are being "tweaked", not sure if that should be the reason not to post issues.
Like to know where and how it is being tweaked, any links?
Also like to know why this should not be a "strict no-no" ?

Changing title to clear gdemet's confusion.

Title: Two animations in the same visual field should not be there » Two animations in the same visual field causes confusion

While I agree that the way that the animations are currently implemented is visually confusing, I'm not convinced that double animations are in and of themselves a strict no-no. I've had some brief conversations with Neil Drumm both in IRC and meatspace, and my understanding is that this is still being worked on, which is why I marked the issue "needs work".

IMO, this visual confusion is accentuated by the fact that some of the map pop-ups are too big and some of the showcase image thumbnails are appearing stretched. My comment was suggesting that in addition to the ongoing tweaks, we should also create and enforce size standards for those images.

So far as numerous feedback from the very beginning of the 11 iterations, as well from numerous user experiences and web user experts more than one animation in the same visual field is against any good design principle. Apart from resources from Neil Drumm you or anyone may like to look at those resources.
And it will be really good idea to do any relevant discussions openly in the issue lists so that if anyone misses the IRC they can catch up here.

It is good to know you want to standardize sizes but even with standardized sizes 2 animations like that are actually "confusing". If you agree "that the animations are currently implemented is visually confusing" then why should it be there?

First thing to do is such thing should not be there. From there you can move onto to 'tweaks!'
In brief: If you do agree it causes confusion, confusing things should not be there. Why should you change the title ?

Care to link to those resources?

kaakuu’s picture

As I told the first big resources are the feedback during the 11 iterations. Care to read those again?

I will care to link if someone cares to link why two moving, jumping animations should be there in the same visual field at the first place. I have plenty of resources but since you [edited on objection] I will stop here.

If you are still interested you may like to visit one of this http://www.nngroup.com/events/tutorials/usability.html or you may email Jakob Nielsen with the current redesign homepage as it is.
That is, if you consider him or his knowledge useful or resourceful.

Now to stay on topic and get some help in this issue can we get an honest answer from you: do you find 2 animations in same field okay for drupal.org and feel comfortable? Do your friends or users known to you find it okay ? Care to answer?

heine’s picture

I am not involved with the redesign. I also don't see my question for urls to those resources as legpulling.

Don't bother though. I'm not going to interact with you ever again.

There can be no excuses for having an image popping up and disappearing every few seconds....no excuse. How in the name of god did this get put in and then left it?!? People hate popups, whether it's a new window popping up or an image popping up like we have here. They look crap and people hate them and they are a design no-no so can someone explain how this got put in?

drumm’s picture

The current image is an overly-big placeholder that will be replaced. The second bubble even says 'todo todo todo'

This is not about how the map content will be or what will be its size.

This issue is about two animations in the same visual field. See this please.
Not sure after reading #852438 (which says "Each pin is shown for 3 seconds now") whether the second animation has been removed or going to be removed.

If removed, it is okay. If not it should be active letting the community participate.

The two animations are staying for the launch. Map animations will restricted to the map itself and not overlapping.

kaakuu’s picture

Visually two animations in the same visual field are difficult to follow. Front page design should never be like this for a CMS like Drupal. Sorry that this "actionable issue" gets a "wont fix" without any valid reason.
