I am just wondering whether I am suffering from a bit of 1and1' itis (as I like to call it) or my install is running fine. Simple question really once you have created the first account and you log out, Should the option to create the first registration disappear from the main page or does this normally stay until content is place on the site. It's just I am running a 1and1 root server and I find I normally have loads of problems with the ****** thing. So I am concerned that something may be being blocked. I have read a few threads about looping front page log ins and know they are listed but I just wanted to be sure I am not being daft before I start tweaking.

its meant to go away after you post your first piece of content

if necessary create an under construction page. then go to adminster -> settings and set default front page to the node you just created.

you dont want to leave that screen stay there, or anyone can reregister as the overall drupal admin.

You have have put my mind at rest many thanks. I know it is a very simple question but I have ended up very suspicious of anything that looks like an anonomly since using this server I have.

?? How could they re register as the overall drupal admin? The super admin is uid=1... if someone else registers AFTER the superadmin has already created their account, they'd just be a normal user, wouldn't they?

anisa you are correct.
A user registered after the first account is created is registered as an authenticated user and not an admin.

Thanks for making me revisit this issue. I set up a new sandbox. When I investigated this problem using 4.7.0 I was replaced as admin, however, my assumption now is someone beat me to the create first account link, when I was setting up the site the first time around.
