We have been running our intranet as a Drupal installation for the past year, upgrading to the latest version regularly.
Over the past two or three weeks since upgrading to 4.7.3 the system really slows down at times; i.e. three minutes to respond to a submit when editing a page.
We run it on a Red Hat Linux installation with Apache 2, PHP 4 and mySQL 4.
At any one time there may be 5 registered updaters and 350+ guests online.
Any suggestions to speed things up would be gratefully received.

tossing out the basics
Make sure cron is running regularly and completing per the logs. cron takes care of some table maintenance. Check your systems CPU and RAM utilization, it may be underpowered after a few years of adding content. Some stuff here: http://drupal.org/node/2601
