Hi I need a dedicated server with root privileges and 24/7 phone support.

I've been using Westhost. But to keep their costs low, the dedicated servers are configured like the shared vps. I don't have full control of the server. Simple commands like top are unavailable.

Would like to hear from all those with dedicated servers.
I got a quote from rackspace (?) for $800 a month. So that's the high end.

what else is out there?

or should i figure out alternative ways to do what I need on Westhost? maybe there are things I can use instead of top. (ps is static, something dynamic would be better) Of course I'm not just talking about top. rpm is also not available.

thank you.

Although I haven't used them myself yet (I plan to) everyone who has seems to rave about the quality of their support. They have both virtual servers (Linux Xen instances) and dedicated servers (actual hardware to yourself) available. Both options give you a 'server' to yourself with root access. The virtual servers have less RAM/disk but are cheaper, while the dedicated hardware options get more RAM/disk although the max CPU grunt available is less unless pay for a high end server.

I don't know whether the support is 24/7 phone support though. But they seem to have fast access to support staff via IM and email around the clock though.

I have not had good experiences with Site5 -- recently, their service has been mediocre/slow at anything requiring more than superficial knowledge --

This is a change -- when I first started with them (18 months ago, give or take) their service was pretty good.

Cheers,

Bill

https://www.bestofdata.com has really good prices on their dedicated server. No phone support, but live chat support and good response time on support tickets. You get full root access, and a number of OSs to pick from. I have 1 server though them myself. Has remote reboots, free OS reloads, all kinds of cool features. I have the $60/month "Dedibox" server, and have had good luck with it.

AllCheapWeb offers dedicated server services from $39 (don't remember real price :) ) but you can look at Dedicated servers

Have you tried Chrono Hosting? They've got shared, DEDICATED, and simple web hosting as well. I think you can get Windows OS, instead of Linux, if you ask... (it's like $20 more or something each year?)

Dedicated Hosting Plan 1
-120GB hard drive
-1GB RAM
-500GB bandwidth
-absolutely dedicated to you alone
-Celeron 2.0Ghz Processor
-Red Hat OS (Windows optional, I think)
$110/month... not bad at all I'd say. I host a couple of videogames with them. I dunno about suppor though. You can only email them... but I've absolutely never had ANY downtime. *passes out*

Interesting how the date of this posting coincides with the date of the user's account creation...
