It allows you to attach an additional image to the option itself on a global level instead of a per product level. This image is then used as a new display type (Option, Radio, Image, etc).

I have modified the code at that link a little bit to add the second functionality mentioned above. Would you be interested in adding this functionality to your module? I can submit a patch to this issue as a starting point if you think a duplicate module would be excess as i do.
