Provide optional side-blocks which
- gives ease of navigation and one-click access
- in absence, gives a broken user experience compared to what we had
- new users who have come to test or download D7 have already been used to these
- helps to look at a glance what new forum posts are and thus offer help directly
- helps to reach my issues (or anything) directly from homepage or any page without having to follow a convoluted path of multiple clicks every time which can be tedious and repulsive - please see picture in the attachment.

It would be sweet if the additional time helps you think more and post more useful issues. Yes, the navigation is different on the redesign site. You will have to deal with it.

Saying Navigation is "different" does not help. It is more convoluted.
Give the option to choose between the classical(current) theme and redesign theme.

It's not more convoluted, on the contrary. A lot of work has been put in the navigation during the redesign process. One of the key result of it is the seamless navigation and search between all the sites in the drupal.org constellation.

Yes, it's different, but there are a lot of helpers everywhere. For one, you will be able to customize your dashboard to put the stuff you need on it (all the things your listed can be done).

You will get used to it. You need to.

I beg to differ.
As far as I remember lot of hours and sweat and feedback from users like me and others went during the redesign process with the assurance that nothing was being set in stone and things will be looked into or open to change when they hit the issue lists in drupal.org proper

It was pointed out indeed at that time that ease of navigation was being missed - at least in such cases.

No one is saying dashboard is not good but what is being asked here is
- option of side blocks : optional : user can turn it on if wished
- and a simple answer to a simpler question : which is easier to reach a page : one click or two clicks?

If the redesign site did allow an individual to set custom nav menu items there would not be any problem. Short of that, optional blocks. Short of that: at least let the user choose between classic and redesign theme.

Thanks for your patience.

Kaakuu,

Thank you. I spent a lot of time looking for this issue. I had naively assumed when I saw the dashboard that I would be able to drag the "blocks" into the HUGE empty spaces on the side.

When the redesign was originally discussed I remember remarking that I, at least, would be much less likely to answer random questions asked on the forums if there was not a block constantly showing me the newest posts. After all, I rarely go to the general forum, and so the only way I'd see requests that were simple enough I could help with them was if they were shown to be all the time.
