From the very beginning of the 11 iterations, throughout the iterations and at present also the community has provided feedback that it is unsuitable for the home page.

It is certainly not "needed" as such. It is a feature. Features are rarely "needed".

The new frontpage will actuall have less content than the current frontpage (measured in kB). So I can't see what's wrong with a small map.

I am marking this as "won't fix". The redesign has been accepted as the result of the design process and we'll not pick it apart a few weeks before we are ready to launch.

Thanks Gerhard. I beg to say that this map was not accepted in the redesign process and there was at least more than a year to remove it. Front page is not a place to load "features"; it already has too many "elements" and is losing focus - against principles of good UI and good web design.

I did not raise this issue so far, but since you say, here is the fact:
current home page when saved in firefox : 222 kbs ( Win XP)
redesign home page when saved in firefox : 365 kbs ( Win XP)

The front page is always best if it is kept as light as possible. This is a proven fact.
And we have too many maps these days to encounter all over the various sites than two years ago : the first sense is "yet another map!" "why do we need it!"

I just wanted to say myself and a few other people think the map is fantastic. It helps create a sense of community and is very eye catching as an example of the power and scale of Drupal activity.
