can this be shown in a block?
eg. last 10 nodes on latest 10 after last 1 etc.

i m thinking along the lines of theonion.com and usmagazine.com .. they did via custom coding. but it would be super cool if any drupal site can do the same

What exactly would you like the content of the block to be? Could you give an example?

in http://drupal.org/node/91927 - i explained a bit but to clarify

usmagazine.com and theonion.com have the latest node in the format title + teaser. the rest of the nodes on the front page have only the titles.

if this module can be modified to list by date or by any formula then it will be even easier for anybody to make a site look like those 2 cited above using the panels.module.

i have been looking for solution for a while : http://drupal.org/node/91183 and this seems like it

That just is not what this module does, same reason as http://drupal.org/node/91927.
