And there was much rejoicing; Drupal has a new default theme for 5.0! The search for a theme to ship in the upcoming release of Drupal has been long and hard. Many people came forward with excellent submissions and the discussions that ensued were often heated and intense. A tremendous amount of work has poured into the effort. Happily the result is quite good. Meet Garland, the new Drupal 5.0 default theme, by Stefan Nagtegaal and Steven Wittens.

One of the things to notice about this theme is its color picker. Conceived late in the night at BarCamp Amsterdam in 2005, this color picker, named Farbtastic, is among the best of its kind. With the use of the color picker, every graphic in the design of the theme can be altered to fit into either a pre-selected color scheme, or one that you design yourself.

For more information about this theme, check out the extensive discussions that have played out on the developers' mailing list as well as the issue tracker. Many congratulation and thanks to the developers who have made this possible.

This is totally awesome! Now Drupal looks as sexy on the outside right out of the box as it does on the inside. And the color-picker is a beautiful touch.

My understanding is that the themeing system in Drupal 5.0 is very different from 4.7. I'm sure a combination of themes and modules could achieve all these effects, but it would probably take a bunch to backport it to 4.7.

On the other hand, it's probably only a matter of time until somebody does it.
