Is there any value with this module if not creating nodes via feeds? My understanding is that tags are supposed to get assigned through extractor even if creating a node manually but I don't see that happening. Also, are the vocabulary terms case sensitive? Are synonyms supported? A step by step use case would be helpful. If you can pass on some details... I may even be happy to provide those steps including any bugs/issues to look out for.

The module does not to extraction out of the box. For non-feed nodes, you can use the Tagging module along with its Extractor submodule, which provides tag suggestions using extractor.
