Is it possible to have a message popup when the homepage loads. It could be a for a promotion, weather or health warning etc. I have been asked if this is possible so as and when the user can select to display a message over the top of the homepage, that will disappear either when clicked or after a set time.

Ideally the overlay should look more like the lighbox effect rather than a standard popup window.

Does anyone have any info on if this is possible?

You may possibly tweak this http://drupal.org/node/481982 and http://drupal.org/files/issues/popup_msg.zip to suit your needs.

The other possibility is to add code for this directly into your page.tpl.php in your theme folder.
