On the Themes page the following description of Zen contains a link to online docs for sub-theming:
"Zen sub-themes are the ultimate starting themes for Drupal 6. Read the *online docs* or the included README-FIRST.txt on how to create a sub-theme."

only message I got while patching was "(Stripping trailing CRs from patch.)", which could have been from how I saved the patch file.
