In the interest of simplicity, the File Name field should default to whatever value would be used were it not for filefield_paths, i.e. "[filefield-filename]".

It does, the default for filename is: [filefield-onlyname-original].[filefield-extension-original]

Is that default value not there for you?

I had created a field already, then added FileField_Paths, when I went back to the field editor to assign the new settings that field was blank. Maybe a spurious error? I'll keep an eye on it, next time I'll stick a kpr() in there to see what's going on.
