Dear all,
Does the latest Macbook Pro have the power to develop with Drupal + Dreamweaver CS3?
I have been using Drupal and MySQL/PHP/Apache with my old PC (6 years old).
However, it is so slow...
I will upgrade to a new computer and I am thinking of making my first move to a Macbook Pro.
I have the specs of the computer; however, there has been a lot of debate on another forum about why the one I am looking at doesn't have the new intel chip i3.
These are the specs of the Macbook Pro
13-inch: 2.4GHz
Intel Core 2 Duo
4GB Memory
250GB hard drive1
SD card slot
NVIDIA GeForce 320M graphics
So, if you could help me understand if it is right to make this move, or view against the idea of converting to a apple mac please can you leave me an answer.
Best wishes
TC

Intel Core 2 Duo? 4GB of RAM?
Intel Core 2 Duo? 4GB of RAM? Of course it is enough to develop! If money is an issue, you would save a lot buying a Dell-HP-or-whatever laptop and installing Ubuntu :-) (NetBeans would be a cool replacement for Dreamweaver CS3). Anyway, the specs of the Macbook Pro seem perfect for your needs.
Intel
Thanks, that's what I need.
I will look into NetBeans!!!
Best wishes
Half the people here use Mac
Half the people here use Mac Book Pro, I've been happy with mine for past year.
Macbook
That's good advice, thanks for adding it.
I strongly recommend ...
I strongly recommend that you send that computer to me, as you will be endlessly frustrated with it.
Can I send you mine too? :)

Mac Book Pro
Perfectly adequate but why Dreamweaver?
Coda or Expresso will do the job with less overhead
Dreamweaver
Thanks, I'll look into Coda or Expresso

I personally love Coda - http://www.panic.com/coda/

Thanks for these links, I thought that DW was the only platform to seriously do any web development. I can write code in HTML; however, the issues start when I have to integrate PHP into the website. That's why I'm for Drupal.
Kind regards,
Thanks
Thanks for correcting me on the name John and for putting in the links

For my Drupal development, I
For my Drupal development, I went from Windows to Ubuntu Linux for a while. Windows is great for MS Office and gaming, but it was full of frustrations for LAMP web development. Linux is great and I still love it. But then I bought a MacBook Pro and my productivity reached new heights.
The answer to your question is a resounding yes. At Drupalcon SF there was a groups shot where everyone held up their laptops. It was like an Apple ad.
I got a MacBook Pro recently
I got a MacBook Pro recently myself. Is there anything in particular that makes you more productive? Personally, I don't feel much of a difference at all. Thanks!
Textmate
Textmate is my favorite coding tool.
It's a wonderful text editor that combines the power of Unix tools with the accessibility of a Mac. It can be run as an application on the desktop, or via terminal. It has built-in automations for scads of scripting languages and the like, including Apache, HTML, CSS, Git, javascript and PHP. You can create projects of related files, use find and replace (including regex) in files and projects, add TODOs and FIXMEs, handle your checkouts with Subversion, and more. Everything has a keyboard command, and you have lots of opportunity to build whatever you're missing.
It's not FOSS, but it is one of the most useful pieces of paid software I own.

The main thing is the command
The main thing is the command line. Windows is not Unix/Linux based and is handicapped in that regard. Yes, I'm aware of Cygwin, but that just doesn't cut it. I moved to Ubuntu Linux so I could have a real command line, but was missing Adobe Creative Suite. Mac OSX game me the best of both worlds, a real shell and it could run Adobe CS.
When deploying on Linux servers (99.9% of the time for me), it's helpful to develop on a platform as similar as possible to where the site will ultimately end up. Helps prevent configuration issues later on.
And use Drush.
Thanks. Still didn't get to
Thanks. Still didn't get to learning the command line or using drush... I heard comments like yours from others too, so maybe it's worth the time to learn it.
I have an old Macbook Pro
I have an old Macbook Pro Intel Core 2 Duo with 1 gig memory -- it's probably 7 years old -- and it's plenty for drupal. I have multiple installations running. I usually have iTunes or and internet radio station running too, and it's fine.
If you can afford to go new, do it, and throw as much RAM as you can towards it. Dreamweaver will need that. But I don't think Drupal will.
New imac drupal is really
New imac drupal is really fast, no performance issues. I sometimes have to pinch myself to see if it's only a dream. Coda is the way to go on a Mac, dreamweaver is obsolete, haven't used it in years.
Thanks
I'm checking all of this out. I have just installed MAMP and it's amazing!!!

I use my 12" PowerBook from 2001 all the time to develop websites. You'll be fine. Also, like mentioned above, ditch DreamWeaver and use Coda. Definately worth the $99.
