I am curious if anyone has attempted to use with Openlayers, which also has Views integration.

Openlayers Proximity also has Rules integration.

My current idea would be to have users view a map with node markers within say 15 miles of their ip address.

Great idea! I just had a chance to check out openlayers, pretty nice module. Seems to work well with Visitor Info, check it out http://wootenswebdesign.com/visitorinfo-map-openlayers

Also saw this comment this week about zooming in on a map based on a node url.

I would think there would be demand to show say locations or people within X distance of a user.

Here is a screen shot of OL Proximity filter which allows for "get location from a string / node"

I have no idea [yet] how to get location from a node but I am thinking that might work.
