If the configuring globally for the themes doesn't work, go to your default theme config page and don't forget to check the two "shortcut icon" boxes, and enter the file path.
BTW you can use a png image. That's what I do. if it doesn't show in IE or in Firefox on Windows, well, hard luck. It's nice to have something special for Linux users!
Anyway thanks you for your explanations, at last we can show off a bit -- a favicon is also very convenient on Firefox when you have plenty of tabs, as it identifies the tab containing such or such web page, more clearly than an often troncated page title.

If the configuring globally for the themes doesn't work, go to your default theme config page and don't forget to check the two "shortcut icon" boxes, and enter the file path.
Seems to be a little bug then, a little lack of functionality. It looks as if there is no way to remove a setting from one theme and let it fall back to the global settings. Or is there one that hasn't been mentioned here yet?
Does anyone happen to know how to solve this directly in the SQL tables? Or perhaps the following may work: Select another theme, remove the entire folder of the offending theme, change the global settings, then put the theme back in.
The above mentioned procedure did not work for me (change the shortcut icon globally, or in the theme settings, and then change theme and change it back). I did all and it was still showing the same old icon, or nothing at all in some browsers.
Replacing the druplicon (/misc/druplicon.png) for the desired image via FTP access solved the problem.
Hi, i have exactly the same problem, i did change it in settings > appareance, but the shortcut icon by default still here, even after cleaning the cache.
Anyone found a solution to this issue or another module ?

short cut icon
The favicon is called the 'shortcut icon' in Drupal.
You can change it by accessing the theme global settings. admin/themes/settings (administer > themes >> configure)

If it doesn't work after changing the global settings, change the theme to another theme and revert back to this current one. It should work then.
