In version 4.7 you can install or remove any type of node.
But in the version 5.0 you story node is not in a module list. I can remove it from Content types menu, but I cannot reactivate it again.

you should be able to create a new node type with the name "story".

You mean that nodes "page" and "story" now fully identical ?

they are fully identical at least since 4.6 but I think even under 4.5 they served the same purpose. If you go to content types and create a node type story it will do what you want. this is not a bug report but a support request at best.
