I would like to know if there is a issue already that would address relating roles to individual Interest Groups like it is currently done with individual lists?

If not, where might I get started trying to write a patch to do this?

I have not seen anything in this vain, although I'm not really clear on the use case.

This is a good idea. The use case is that it's MailChimp best practice to not duplicate users between lists. If you could match Drupal roles to MailChimp Groups, then you could have a single "list" for all of your site's users with "groups" for each of the roles (some users have more than one role).

Fret not! The 7.x-4.x and 8.x versions come highly recommended. Both are using Mailchimp’s new API 3.0 and are being actively maintained. “What is dead may never die, but rises again, harder and stronger!”
