Requested features: add buddy workflow [#92649]

I think it's pretty clear what most of us think should be added/removed from the buddylist module.

1. No more buddies of - add an invitation request (I believe there is an unapproved one around here somewhere)
2. Ability to view pending requests, incoming requests
3. Ability to place the 'add to buddy list, remove from buddylist, retract friendship invitation, accept friendship invitation' link in the user_profile.tpl.php file
4. Create a privacy feature where only friends can view that users node/profiles based on what the user wants (I've already developed something like this already if you want to see it)

This last one has to do with all of social networking, not only buddylist
5. A main page personalized for the user which shows their messages, friend requests, friends recent posts, a snippet of their gallery, etc

I'm not for invitation requests. What I would like is:

Let's say I add a friend. He is automatically added to my list as a 'friend'. I show up in his 'fans' list - he can add me as a friend from this list. Optionally, if both individuals add each other, they are 'mutual friends'. Access rules could be set for fans, friends and mutual friends, offering multiple levels of control.

With this system, no fear of rejection (what if I add someone and he reject the invitation?). It could also be the base of a popularity system (person X has 200 fans, person Y has 10 - display a list of most popular/influential users, etc).

I disagree with Fireangel (think your caps key is playing up there mate).

What I want, and many users on my site would like is what the original poster is suggesting. A system of adding place which is tried and tested elsewhere, like on myspace. You request someone to add as friend, they say yes or no. Thats it. None of this "fear of rejection" stuff, it just waters down the whole point of the friends list. People can deal with rejection!

I think we disagree because we want two different things - you want a "friends" list in the purest sense of the word, while I want a 'contacts' list, which is more appropriate for corporate environments. Just a way to track what others are doing, and if each other are on their respective contacts lists, give special 'friends' related permissions. Could be optional for Buddylist - at worse, I'll just hack the module to fit my needs if no one wants the same thing as me :)
