In the near future, Linden Lab will be implementing the new Display Name feature.
For those not familiar with this new feature and the changes it will bring with it, see: Display Names Wiki page

This new feature will essentially eliminate avatar names as we know them today. Once Linden Lab implements the changes, users will no longer be known to Second Life as "Firstname Lastname". Instead, they will be known as "username". New users, when signing up for a Second Life account, will choose a single-word, alphanumeric username. From the Display Names Wiki page:

A username is an ASCII (alphanumeric) string with no spaces and has a 31 character maximum.

Required SlUser Module Changes:

Right now, SlUser gets the Full Name of the avatar when that avatar is verified at a terminal in-world. In order to support the changes by Linden Lab, I propose that SlUser begin getting the Username instead of the avatar's Full Name. This is primarily used if SlUser is set up to "Force username", where it changes the username in the Drupal database to be the same as the avatar's name. Since avatar names will no longer be used, we should instead use the new Second Life username.

On the SlUser settings page, it would probably be a good idea to allow people to choose to use the avatar's Second Life Full Name or the Second Life Username, since Full Name will still work (it is considered legacy support by Linden Lab), so an additional set of radio buttons (an either/or choice) under the "Profile" section of the SlUser settings page will be needed for this, such as...

Profile

[x] Force Username
( )Use Avatar Full Name
(*)Use Avatar Username

This will provide some backward compatibility for people using SlUser who wish to continue to use the Full Name, but allow the rest of us to use the new Username. On my site, I plan to change all existing usernames to the actual Second Life usernames, which will be easy, since existing Second Life users will all get new usernames (for example, if your Second Life avatar's name is "John Smith", your new username will be "john.smith").

It is important to note that if we choose to use the Full Name, all new avatars created, when they verify at a terminal, will pass the value of "username 'Resident'", with "Resident" being the last name (because new avatars will not have last names). The actual avatar name will still be passed for avatars created before this change was made by Linden Lab. This information can be found on the Display Names Wiki page, near the bottom of the page.

Username: kelly.linden
Full name: Kelly Linden

I just checked the Second Life registration page and it no longer allows people to register with a first and last name. The new Display Name/Username changes are now in effect.

You can see the new registration page here: https://join.secondlife.com
