First of all, I am a completely newbie to website creation and CMS's, so I apologize if I'm missing something obvious. But I am having an extremely difficult time installing and accessing Drupal.

I tried the "instant installer" tool that my host (Powweb.com) offers, but when I try to access Drupal through the website address, I keep getting the message:

"The server encountered an unexpected condition which prevented it from fulfilling the request.
The script had an error or it did not produce any output. If there was an error, you should be able to see it in the error log. "

I then tried to remove this installation and re-install it manually. I uninstalled Drupal using the instant installer tool, then deleted the Drupal folder and the database I created.

These are the steps I used in installing Drupal:

1) I then downloaded Drupal from the official website and copied the Drupal files into my web folder.

2) I re-created my database and imported the Drupal database structure from Drupal file "database.4.1.mysql" in the "\database" folder.

3) I then changed the settings in the "settings.php" file in the "sites\default\" folder to point to the database, pointing it to:

$db_url = 'mysql://username:password@xxxxxx.powweb.com/databasename';
$db_prefix = '';

"xxxxxxx.powweb.com" being the location of my database. I also used the appropriate username, password, and databasename.

However, when I tried to the Drupal interface, I get the same error message as before.

I then tried installing Joomla also using the instant installer tool from my web host. And when I try to access Joomla, I get the very same error message.

Does it have anything to do with the permissions on my web folder perhaps? What should the permissions on my web folder be set to?

Anyone have any idea what the problem might be? I have spent many hours trying to figure this out and am incredibly frustrated. Thanks!

Try changing xxxxxx.powweb.com to localhost

because no software is working for you, I'd suggest dropping a support note to powweb, something may be wrong with your package.

I'm not sure if localhost works on powweb servers, my past experience with them was that one had to point directly to their mysql server. mysql05.powweb.com. This could have changed in the past year that I havent been with them however.

Thank you t.avarechts and VeryMisunderstood for you replies. I did try using localhost and it gave the same error message. Also when you run the installer tool, it changes the setting to xxxxx.powweb.com, so I figured that was the correct format.

Anyway I sent them a trouble ticket at about the same time I wrote this post. And now I can finally get to the drupal login page. (thank goodness! I was banging my head against my computer all morning over this thing!)

I look forward to getting started! I'll probably be back later with more annoying questions :).

As a recent PowWeb defector, I just thought that I would chime in about their page loading times. With just one domain name pointing to my account, the page load times ranged from about 3 to 5 seconds. When I started adding more domains, the page load times doubled and would occasionally time out on admin pages. What was weird was PowWeb includes an install script for Drupal and they still had a hard time loading the pages. After a few frustrating nights on the phone with tech support, I decided it was time to leave and found different hosting.

When endurance moved in and changed the platform, things went downhill. I defected in may.
